///The Scene

Last night I checked out regional band The Anatomy of Frank, from Charlottesville, Virginia, playing at Relix Variety Theatre.

What I witnessed was a band of high-stepping, tango-dancing baby faces of rock n roll.  Part jam band, part experimental, part banjo-art-pop-rock, the band has a wide-ranging sound - all of which they do well.

During the show, I caught sounds that reminded me of Radio Head, Phish, and maybe even a little Dave Matthews - mostly because TAF drummer Chris reminded me of DMB drummer Carter Beauford.  I'm a sucker for a great drummer, and Chris was smokin' the skins during TAF's Relix show.

Nine months into the life of the band, they're already on their first multi-state tour, with Knoxville having been the 5th of 10 gigs that included the first leg of TAF's summer tour.

TAF appears to be still figuring out what their musical niche will be - their song "Saturday Morning" incorporates a banjo played by frontman Kyle, and it's a great song with a professional video to promote it.  But it's the only song that features banjo playing, other than the last song of the night, which was mostly instrumental.

I would like to hear more banjo-art-pop-rock, but that's just me.  All in all, I would highly recommend catching The Anatomy of Frank the next time they roll through Knoxville.
